How To Get Your Fishing License

How to get your fishing license: what you need, where to get it, and how long it takes

Getting a fishing license is one of those things that sounds more complicated than it is. In most states you can have one in under five minutes — and it's what keeps you legal, keeps the fishery funded, and keeps you from starting an otherwise good day on the water with a fine.

A fishing license is a state-issued permit that allows you to fish legally in public waters. Requirements, costs, and age exemptions vary by state, but the process to get one is roughly the same everywhere.

Do you actually need one?

Almost certainly, yes. Most states require a license for anyone above a certain age — commonly 16, though it varies. Some states offer free or reduced licenses for seniors, disabled anglers, or active military. The easiest way to confirm what applies to you is to check your state's DNR website directly.

Where do you get it?

Online through your state DNR website is the fastest option — most states let you purchase, download, and print a license in a few minutes. You can also pick one up in person at most bait shops, sporting goods stores, and Walmart locations that carry fishing gear. If you're traveling out of state, you'll need a license for the state you're fishing in, not your home state.

What does it cost?

It depends on your state and the type of license. A standard freshwater annual license typically runs between $15 and $50 for residents. Non-resident licenses cost more. Many states also offer short-term licenses — one-day or seven-day options — which are worth considering if you're visiting or just getting started.

Getting started

Go to your state's DNR website, select your license type, and complete the purchase online. Print it or save it to your phone. It's worth doing before you head out rather than trying to sort it out at the water.
