AdventureAwaits

Looking for something fun and local to do this summer?  Get outside and drop a line! This quick reference guide will make sure you have all you need before heading out to your favorite body of water for a day of fishing.

It's important to know more about fishing equipment and fishing accessories to make your time on the water more efficient and enjoyable. Watch the videos below to learn how to rig live fishing bait and learn more about terminal tackle.

Pick the Right Gear

For anglers that are just starting out, spincast reels on an appropriately sized fishing rod will bring the most success. Spincast reels are easier to learn for first time anglers and will limit line tangles for a fun filled, frustration-free day of fishing. Be sure to check local fishing license requirements and regulations in your area before starting your summer fishing adventure.

Pick the Right Tackle

While your average tackle box might be filled with artificial lures and baits, the best tackle for beginners is live bait, such as earthworms, crickets, or minnows. Live bait is easy to put on a hook and does not require any special technique to encourage bites. We suggest the following fishing bait and items for your tackle box:

  • Live bait
    • Worms
    • Minnows
    • Crickets
  • Small hooks
  • Small weights
  • Small or medium sized bobbers
  • Pliers
    • For cutting line & removing hook from fish

Pick a Spot

Don’t have a favorite spot to fish yet? Not to worry – the Where to Fish tool will help you to locate areas close to home for you and your family to explore.

Grab Any Extras

Things like water, snacks, chairs, towels, sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, a cooler or stringer (if you plan to keep your catches), or any other outside accessories can help the day to run smoothly, especially with young kiddos.
